How do you know if you are choosing the right accounting software for your business?

Choosing the right accounting software. With so many options out there, it’s obvious that recommendation plays a big part in the software you choose. However, the recommendations you receive may be coming from people who have needs very different to yours! So what are the other factors you need to consider?

You can choose a software that fits your lifestyle. If you’re on the go, cloud-based software may be best. It’s available when and where you need it, but if you work from a single location, desktop software may be a better fit.

Unless you’re an accountant (or a software developer), the ins and outs of accounting software may seem complicated and daunting. Make sure our learning curve isn’t too steep. Look for software that provides resources to help, like webinars, help articles and videos.

This may sound like a simple one but, what exactly do you need from your accounting software? Make a list of the features you actually need and organise it from most important to least. Only you will know best what you can and can’t leave without.

Compare prices between accounting software providers and know exactly what and how you’re charged. Some companies charge a standard monthly fee, while others have a single upfront cost with additional charges for add on services. Some hidden fees may include set up, customer support, and cloud storage.

You may have questions or need help understanding your new software. And when that time comes, you’ll want a support team that can help quickly and easily. Quality customer support that is knowledgeable and easy to get a hold of will be key to switching over to new software.

The items listed above are just a starting point. You also need to consider the following:

  • Reports: Look for easy-to-read reports that are shareable with your accountant, managers, or other trusted employees.
  • Accounting method: Choose accounting software that matches your preferred accounting method.
  • Security: Make sure that the software has your security interests in mind.
  • Commitment: Choose month-to-month or annual commitments (whichever fits your needs).
  • Reviews: Trust customers who’ve been using the software for weeks, months, and even years—let them tell you just how good the software is.
